Fighting Back Against Parkinson’s
A non-contact boxing program built for adults living with Parkinson’s. Footwork, mitt work, bag work, and balance drills — in a room full of people cheering you on. No experience needed. Nobody ever takes a hit.
What Rise & Strike Is
Rise & Strike is our own boxing-based fitness program for adults living with Parkinson’s — built right here inside Flow Academy BJJ Riverside. You’ll work through footwork, mitt work, bag work, and balance and coordination drills, all in a group setting with a coach right there beside you. It’s non-contact from start to finish. No sparring, and nobody ever takes a punch — in partner drills, the only contact is glove tapping glove.
Rise & Strike is its own program with its own identity — built for one purpose: helping adults with Parkinson’s fight back and take their lives back.
You don’t need any boxing background. You don’t need to be in shape already. Come as you are, at whatever level you’re at, and we’ll meet you there. Caregivers and spouses are welcome to train alongside you or pull up a chair and stay close. This is a room full of people showing up for each other — and for themselves.
Footwork, hand speed, and coordination drills that keep your body working and engaged.
Combinations and reaction work that ask your brain and body to talk to each other.
Show up, put in the work, and walk out standing a little taller than you came in.
Nobody does this alone. We train shoulder to shoulder and back each other up.
The Flow of a Session
Every class moves through the same stations, so you always know what’s coming. Here’s the flow.
We start easy — loosening up the joints, getting the blood moving, and waking up the body with gentle, guided movement. Your coach sets the pace and nobody gets left behind.
Boxing lives in the feet. We drill stepping, pivoting, and shifting your weight with control, building the kind of balance and coordination you use every single day.
You throw, the coach catches. Working one-on-one on the focus mitts, you’ll practice punches, combinations, and timing with someone guiding every rep.
Now it’s you and the heavy bag. This is where you dig in, throw with power, and let it out — building strength and stamina at your own pace, round by round.
Dedicated drills for stability, reaction time, and staying steady on your feet. We mix it up so it stays challenging, fun, and useful outside the gym.
We bring the heart rate down, stretch it out, and end together as a group. This is where we check in, share a laugh, and remind each other why we showed up.
New Here?
Take a breath. Here’s exactly what to expect so nothing catches you off guard.
Comfortable clothes you can move in. We train on the mats, so shoes come off at the edge — wear shoes you can slip on and off easily. You’ll be in socks on the mat.
Water and yourself. You don’t need gloves to get started — and when you’re ready for your own pair, we’ll help you pick the right ones.
You’ll be greeted by name, introduced to the coach, and walked through the class before it starts. You go at your own pace the whole way through. If you need to sit and rest, you sit and rest. No pressure, no judgment.
Come see if it’s a fit before you commit to anything.
This is worth saying twice — Rise & Strike is a non-contact program. There’s no sparring and nobody ever takes a punch. You’ll hit mitts and bags, and in partner drills the only contact is glove tapping glove — a punch never lands on a person.

If you love someone living with Parkinson’s, this room is for you too.
You’re welcome to stay for the whole class — pull up a chair and watch, or lace up and train right alongside them. A lot of caregivers tell us the hour goes by faster when they’re moving too, and there’s something good about being in it together instead of waiting in the car.
You’ll meet other spouses, partners, and family members who get it — people walking the same road you are. You don’t have to explain anything here. You can just be part of it. Come see what a class feels like from the inside, and decide from there.

Your Coach
Owner & Coach
Zaide co-owns Flow Academy BJJ Riverside and coaches Rise & Strike herself. She partnered with Carlos Miller to run this program because they believe in its benefits, know there is a great need for it in the Parkinson’s community, and want to raise that awareness. She leads every class with patience, energy, and a genuine belief in the people in the room. You’re not a patient here. You’re a fighter, and she coaches you like one.
Rise & Strike runs inside Flow Academy BJJ Riverside, home to head instructor Professor Carlos Miller, a 4th-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. It’s a real academy with real coaches and a community that’s been training and growing together for years.
