Why We Train in a Group: Community at Rise & Strike
I could have set Rise & Strike up as one-on-one sessions. Some people would probably prefer that — just them, a coach, and a bag, no audience. But I built it as a group on purpose, and after watching what happens in that room, I'd never do it any other way.
Here's why we train together.
Nobody rises alone
The motto we live by is simple: We Rise. We Strike. Together. That last word carries the whole thing. Living with Parkinson's can get isolating. It's easy to feel like you're the only one dealing with what you're dealing with. The moment you walk into a room full of people working through the same thing, that feeling starts to shrink.
You look around and you're not the only one anymore. There are people ahead of you and people right beside you, all throwing punches, all showing up on a Monday morning. That's powerful in a way that a solo session just can't be.
The room pulls you forward
On the days you don't feel like it — and there will be days you don't feel like it — the group is what gets you there. You come because people are expecting you. You come because you don't want to miss it. And once you're in the room, the energy carries you. Somebody finishes a hard round and the room reacts. Somebody nails a combination they couldn't do last month and everyone sees it.
That kind of encouragement is contagious. You work a little harder because the person next to you is working hard. You push through one more round because you're not doing it alone. I've watched people surprise themselves in a group in ways they never would have on their own.
Everyone started somewhere
There's no ranking here, no pecking order. The person on their third year and the person on their first day are in the same room, and the veterans are usually the first ones to welcome the newcomer. Nobody's judging your footwork. Nobody cares how hard you can hit the bag. We all started at zero, and everybody remembers what day one felt like.
That's what makes it safe to be a beginner here. You're not walking into a room of experts who'll make you feel behind. You're walking into a room of people who've got your back.
The community circle
We end every single class the same way — we come together as a group, bring the heart rate down, stretch it out, and check in with each other. We call it the community circle. It's where we share a laugh, mark the wins, and remind each other why we showed up.
A lot of people tell me this is their favorite part of class. Not because the workout's done, but because of who's standing in the circle with them. That's not an accident. That's the point.
Caregivers are part of it too
The community doesn't stop with the fighters. Spouses and caregivers are part of the room, whether they're training alongside their person or cheering from a chair. Families get to know families. People trade phone numbers. Friendships start on the gym floor and keep going outside of it. That web of support is one of the best things this program has, and it only exists because we do this together.
Come stand in the circle
You can read about community all day, but you have to feel it to get it. The best way to understand what I mean is to come to a class and stand in the circle at the end.
Your first class is free. Call (951) 337-3781 or fill out the form on our site, and come find out what it feels like to rise together.
Strength. Balance. Community. That last one might be the one that keeps you coming back.
